Officers responded to reports of gunfire near Kipling Avenue and Albion Road around 8:30 p.m. They found Kaur suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Investigators said the attack appeared to be targeted. Singh was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday morning. He is scheduled to appear in court later this week.

Kaur, a recent immigrant from India, had been living in Toronto for about two years. Friends described her as a quiet and hardworking woman who was pursuing a career in healthcare.

The Indian consulate in Toronto said it is in touch with Kaur's family and is providing consular assistance. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
