Thanedar faces a primary challenge from Donavan McKinney, a progressive who has drawn support from Senator Bernie Sanders. The contest has become a test of the party’s ideological divide, with Thanedar representing a more centrist position and McKinney pushing for progressive policies such as Medicare for All and a Green New Deal.

The 13th District, which includes parts of Detroit and its suburbs, is heavily Democratic, making the primary the de facto general election. Thanedar, who first won the seat in 2022, has focused his campaign on economic development and job creation, while McKinney has criticized him for accepting corporate PAC money.

Thanedar welcomed the endorsement, saying it reflects his effectiveness in Congress. McKinney’s campaign dismissed the move as establishment politics, arguing that voters should decide the race. The primary is scheduled for August 6.
