A new initiative connects Indian mango growers with Atlanta consumers, shortening the supply chain.
A new initiative called The Mango Trail aims to bring Indian mangoes directly from orchards to consumers in Atlanta. The program seeks to reduce the time and steps between harvest and sale, preserving freshness.
The trail connects farmers in India with distributors and retailers in the Atlanta area. Organizers say the direct route cuts out middlemen, allowing mangoes to reach customers within days of being picked.
The initiative focuses on popular Indian mango varieties such as Alphonso and Kesar. These varieties are prized for their sweetness and aroma but are often difficult to find fresh in U.S. markets.
The Mango Trail is expected to operate during the peak mango season from April to June. Organizers hope to expand the program to other U.S. cities in future years.
