Supreme Court dismisses EWS student's plea against private medical college fee hike, suggests seeking scholarship.
The Supreme Court dismissed a plea by an Economically Weaker Section (EWS) student challenging a fee hike by a private medical college. The bench told the petitioner that if he is unable to pay, he should get a scholarship.
The student had approached the court after the college increased the annual fee from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 24 lakh. He argued that the hike violated the terms of admission under the EWS quota.
The court, however, declined to intervene, stating that the student could seek financial assistance through scholarships or other means. The bench noted that the college had offered a concession but the student did not accept it.
The ruling underscores the limited scope of judicial intervention in fee structures of private institutions, especially when alternative funding options exist.
