The Trump administration has announced a new crackdown on immigration programs that are widely used by Indian professionals in the United States. The measures target H-1B visas, green cards, Optional Practical Training (OPT), and Employment Authorization Documents (EADs).

The crackdown aims to tighten eligibility and reduce the number of foreign workers entering the U.S. under these categories. H-1B visas, which allow skilled workers to fill specialized roles, face stricter scrutiny and higher denial rates.

Green card applications will also see increased hurdles, with longer processing times and additional documentation requirements. OPT, which permits foreign graduates to work temporarily in their field of study, is subject to new restrictions on duration and employer sponsorship.

EADs, which grant work authorization to certain immigrants, including asylum seekers and spouses of H-1B holders, will face more rigorous review and shorter validity periods. The changes are expected to disproportionately affect Indian nationals, who constitute a large share of applicants in these categories.

The administration argues that the reforms are necessary to protect American workers and ensure compliance with immigration laws. Critics contend that the policies will harm U.S. competitiveness and deter global talent from contributing to the economy.
