Microsoft announced it is laying off approximately 4,000 employees, primarily in its Xbox division, as part of a broader restructuring effort. The cuts represent about 5% of the company's total workforce and are aimed at reallocating resources toward artificial intelligence and operational efficiency.

The layoffs affect multiple Xbox studios, including those involved in game development and publishing. Microsoft said the restructuring is intended to align its gaming business with long-term strategic priorities, including investments in AI technologies that can enhance game creation and player experiences.

This is the latest in a series of job reductions at Microsoft following earlier cuts in 2023 and 2024. The company has been shifting focus toward AI after a multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Microsoft's gaming division, which includes Activision Blizzard, has also been undergoing integration since the $69 billion acquisition closed in 2023.

Affected employees will receive severance packages and career transition support, Microsoft said. The company expects the restructuring to be completed by the end of the fiscal year.
