The US Department of Labor has launched an aggressive investigation into H-1B and PERM visa fraud, intensifying compliance checks amid complaints against Indian IT companies. Federal investigators operating under a fraud task force are issuing subpoenas and responding to whistleblower claims that name firms including Cognizant.

The probe targets allegations of misuse of the H-1B visa program, which allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations. PERM labor certification, also under scrutiny, is a process for employers to sponsor foreign workers for permanent residency.

Whistleblower complaints have specifically identified Cognizant and other Indian IT firms, prompting the task force to seek documents and records. The Department of Labor has not disclosed the full scope of the investigation or the number of companies involved.

The crackdown reflects a broader US government effort to enforce visa program rules and protect American workers. Previous cases have resulted in fines and debarment for companies found violating H-1B regulations.
