Can OCI and NRI Get an Aadhaar Card? A Complete Guide

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) allows certain categories of Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Non-Resident Indians (NRI) to apply for an Aadhaar card. Aadhaar is a 12-digit biometric identity number linked to an individual's demographic and biometric information.

OCIs who have resided in India for 182 days or more in the 12 months preceding the application are eligible to apply. NRIs, defined as Indian citizens living abroad, can also apply if they have spent at least 182 days in India during the previous year. The application process requires documents such as a valid passport, proof of address, and proof of relationship if applying for a child.

Applicants must visit an Aadhaar enrollment center in India to provide biometric data, including fingerprints and iris scans. The process is free of charge, and the Aadhaar card is typically mailed to the applicant's Indian address within a few weeks.

It is important to note that Aadhaar is not mandatory for OCIs or NRIs, but it can simplify various processes such as opening bank accounts, filing taxes, and accessing government services in India. However, Aadhaar cannot be used as a substitute for a passport or visa for travel purposes.
