Canada Deports 3,323 Indians in First Half of 2026

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported that the deportations from January to June 2026 were driven primarily by visa overstays and rejected asylum claims. The figure represents a sharp increase compared to the 3,500 removals recorded for the entire previous year.

Most of the deportees were individuals who had entered Canada on temporary visas, such as student or visitor permits, and remained beyond their authorized stay. Others had their refugee claims denied after failing to meet the criteria for protection under Canadian law.

Immigration lawyers and community advocates attribute the rise to stricter enforcement measures and a backlog in asylum processing that has led to more negative decisions. The CBSA has also increased its use of removal orders and travel document acquisition to expedite deportations.

The surge has raised concerns among Indian diaspora organizations, which point to the financial and emotional toll on families. Some deportees have appealed their removals, but Canadian law requires most to leave the country while their appeals are pending.

The Indian government has not issued an official statement on the deportations, but consular officials have been assisting affected nationals with documentation and travel arrangements. The trend is expected to continue as Canada tightens its immigration enforcement policies.
