
Arika Kundu, an eighth-grader from Minnesota, invented LIGNEX, a biosorption technique that repurposes discarded peanut shells into a natural filter for pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables.
The process converts peanut-shell waste into a lignocellulosic material that binds to and traps pesticide molecules when applied to produce. Kundu developed the method as a science fair project after learning about the health risks associated with pesticide exposure.
LIGNEX offers a low-cost, eco-friendly alternative to conventional chemical washes or peeling, which can strip nutrients. The material can be rinsed off with water after use, leaving no residue.
Kundu's invention has gained attention for its potential to reduce pesticide intake, particularly in regions with heavy agricultural pesticide use. She is currently exploring ways to scale the method for household and commercial applications.
The project earned her top honors at regional science competitions, and she hopes to eventually patent LIGNEX and make it widely available.
