Events and observances mark the start of American Indian Heritage Month.
American Indian Heritage Month officially began this week, with events planned across the country to honor Native American history and culture.
Federal agencies, schools, and tribal organizations are hosting ceremonies, educational programs, and cultural exhibitions throughout November.
The month-long observance aims to recognize the contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the United States.
First designated in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, the heritage month has been proclaimed annually by subsequent administrations.
