Sampat will hold joint appointments in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Department of Economics at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

His research focuses on the economics of innovation, intellectual property, and pharmaceutical policy, with an emphasis on how patent systems affect drug development and access to medicines.

The Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships were established in 2013 through a $350 million gift from Michael R. Bloomberg to recruit leading interdisciplinary scholars to Johns Hopkins.

Sampat previously served as a professor at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and has published widely on patent reform and pharmaceutical innovation.
