U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi, Suhas Subramanyam, and Shri Thanedar are urging Indian Americans to run for public office. The three lawmakers made the appeal during a virtual event organized by a community group.
Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois' 8th district, said Indian Americans need to have a seat at the table where decisions are made. He noted that the community's growing population and economic success should translate into greater political representation.
Subramanyam, a first-term congressman from Virginia's 10th district, emphasized the importance of local offices. He said school boards, city councils, and state legislatures are entry points where Indian Americans can make a difference.
Thanedar, who represents Michigan's 13th district, encouraged attendees to overcome hesitation about entering politics. He said the community has the skills and resources to succeed in campaigns and governance.
The lawmakers also discussed challenges such as fundraising and name recognition. They advised aspiring candidates to build networks and start early. The event was part of ongoing efforts to boost Indian American civic engagement.
