New US Bill Proposes 7-Year Green Card Path for Indian Immigrants

The Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929, reintroduced in Congress, would create a streamlined path to permanent residency for long-term U.S. residents. Indian professionals, who face some of the longest green card backlogs, could benefit from a seven-year timeline under the proposal.

The bill targets individuals who have lived in the United States for years without obtaining permanent status. Current backlogs, particularly for employment-based visas from India, can stretch beyond a decade due to per-country caps.

Supporters argue the measure would help retain skilled workers and reduce uncertainty for families. The legislation must pass both chambers and be signed by the president to take effect.
