EU Backs Stricter Migration Rules

The European Parliament has approved a set of reforms that would allow for mass deportations of asylum seekers and the establishment of offshore detention camps in member states. The measures are part of a broader effort to tighten migration rules across the European Union.

Under the approved plan, EU countries would be permitted to detain asylum seekers in offshore facilities while their claims are processed. The reforms also streamline procedures for deporting individuals whose applications are rejected.

The legislation now requires final approval from all 27 EU member states before it can take effect. The European Commission has expressed support for the changes, arguing they are necessary to manage migration flows more effectively.

Human rights groups have criticized the reforms, warning that offshore detention could lead to abuses and violate international law. Proponents, however, say the measures will deter irregular migration and reduce the burden on frontline states like Italy and Greece.

The approval marks a significant shift in EU migration policy, which has been a contentious issue among member states for years. The final vote by national governments is expected in the coming months.
