Indian-American Shrey Parikh won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, correctly spelling the championship word to claim the title. The competition, held in National Harbor, Maryland, featured 234 spellers from across the United States and several other countries.
Parikh, a seventh-grader from Texas, advanced through 13 rounds of increasingly difficult words before securing victory. His winning word was not immediately disclosed by organizers.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is one of the oldest and most prestigious academic competitions in the United States, dating back to 1925. Parikh is the latest in a long line of Indian-American winners, who have dominated the contest in recent years.
