Iran held the funeral of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday, with state media showing large crowds at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran. The caskets of Khamenei and four family members killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes were on display.
Mourners, dressed in black, wept openly and performed traditional Shia mourning rituals, including women slapping their heads and men beating their chests. The event featured curated state rhetoric and organized demonstrations aimed at projecting unity among government supporters.
Chants of 'Death to America' and signs reading '#KillTrump' were prominent. Some mourners waved red flags symbolizing revenge and yellow flags representing Hezbollah. A poster depicted Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as wanted men, offering a reward of land for killing them.
Other placards showed images of Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Netanyahu with the words 'There will be blood.' A funeral spokesperson said the ceremonies were delayed due to 'the war conditions' and 'the brutal U.S. invasion.'
Khamenei was killed in the first wave of airstrikes, which also reportedly killed 170 people at a school. He was succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei, who media reports said was absent from the public funeral.
