Indian students being used as foot soldiers by gangs operating in Canada: FINTRAC

Canada's financial intelligence unit, FINTRAC, has issued a warning that Indian students in Canada are being exploited as foot soldiers by criminal gangs. The agency's latest report highlights the increasing involvement of international students in illicit activities orchestrated by organized crime networks.

According to FINTRAC, these students are often recruited under false pretenses, lured by promises of easy money or job opportunities. Once drawn in, they are used for tasks such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and other illegal operations. The report notes that the students' vulnerable status, including their temporary residency and financial pressures, makes them prime targets for gang recruitment.

The warning comes amid broader concerns about the rise of organized crime in Canada and its impact on immigrant communities. FINTRAC emphasized that the exploitation of Indian students not only fuels criminal enterprises but also poses risks to the students themselves, who may face legal consequences and deportation.

Authorities are urging educational institutions and community organizations to raise awareness among international students about the dangers of gang involvement. FINTRAC also called for enhanced cooperation between law enforcement and financial institutions to detect and disrupt the flow of illicit funds linked to these activities.
