American nightmare: Beneath the glossy stories of the Indian diaspora lies a darker reality

A report titled 'American Nightmare' counters the prevalent narrative of the Indian diaspora's success in the United States, pointing to widespread issues of racial discrimination, financial strain, and mental health crises. The study, published by The Times of India, draws on surveys and interviews with Indian Americans across multiple states.

The report details that nearly 60% of respondents reported experiencing workplace discrimination, while 45% said they faced racial slurs or microaggressions. Financial stress was also common, with 38% of participants carrying significant debt from education or housing costs.

Mental health emerged as a critical concern, with 42% of respondents reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression. Many cited isolation from family networks and pressure to meet high expectations as contributing factors.

The findings challenge the 'model minority' stereotype often applied to Indian Americans, who are among the highest-earning ethnic groups in the U.S. The report calls for greater attention to the community's internal diversity and the systemic barriers that persist despite economic gains.
